NBDHE Dental Hygiene Board Updates
⏰ NUMBER OF QUESTIONS AND TIME
The NBDHE Dental Hygiene Board Exam is comprised of 350 total questions. The examination contains a discipline-based component and a case-based component with test specifications as shown below:Discipline-Based Component (200 questions)
The discipline-based component contains questions addressing three major areas:
- Scientific Basis for Dental Hygiene Practice (61 items [30%])
- Provision of Clinical Dental Hygiene Services (115 items [58%])
- Community Health/Research Principles (24 items [12%])
Case-Based Component (150 questions)
The case-based component includes 150 questions involving dental hygiene patient cases. There will be 12-15 cases so you can expect about 12-15 questions per case. The cases will relate to adult and child patients and will be supplemented with patient histories, dental charts, radiographs and clinical photographs. You can expect at least oe case regarding patients with the following characteristics: geriatric, adult-periodontal, pediatric, special needs and medically compromised (one whose health status may require modification of standard treatment or special consideration). Therefore, it’s important to focus in on these areas when studying. Further, case-based items will require you to have knowledge in the following areas: assessing patient characteristics, obtaining and interpreting radiographs, planning/managing dental hygiene care, performing periodontal procedures, using preventive agents, providing supportive treatment service and professional/ethical responsibility.
Your test day will run like this:
In summary:
- Optional tutorial (15 mins): You can go through the simulation to understand how the computer works, how to submit questions, review, go to the next question etc.
- Morning Session: Discipline-Based Component (3.5 hours to complete Component A Session 1 and 2): You will solve 100 questions in Session 1 without breaks. Once submitted, you will be presented with an optional 15 minute break. When you’re ready to attack Session 2, whatever time you have remaining from Session 1 will be carried over to Session 2 where you will answer another 100 questions.
- Optional break (30 mins): After you are finished with the morning session, you will have the option to “start your break” and if you say yes, you will be able to rest. But note that you still have to raise your hand to have a proctor escort you out of the room. So the 30 mins may actually be shorter than 30 mins, if you do not leave the room as soon as you start your break. So make sure that you are keeping an eye on the time.
- Afternoon Session 2: Case-Based Component (4 hours to complete Component B Session 1 and 2). You will solve 75 questions in Session 1 without breaks. After that, you will be presented with an optional 15 minute break. When you’re ready to attack Session 2 (the remainder 75 questions), whatever time you will have remaining from Session 1 will be carried over to Session 2 where you will answer another 75 questions. In total, you will solve between 12-15 case studies that feature radiographs, photographs, patient chart, profile and will cover geriatric, adult-periodontal, pediatric, special needs and medically compromised (one whose health status may require modification of standard treatment or special consideration).
